Gifts or Experiences??
Why did we start gifting experiences? Our kids are getting to the age where they don’t need more stuff, and stuff is just that. Yes, they may ask for the latest gadget or game (and we still do small gifts), but eventually they are forgotten and tossed. And showing them the world, creating memories with them is something that will last forever. They will look back on those trips, but they will undoubtedly forget the gifts they received.
It doesn’t HAVE to be expensive.
Travel can be pricey, especially in today’s market. But you don’t have to get them the most expensive trip to that all inclusive resort if it’s not in your budget! Disney, Universal, season passes to Six Flags, Great Wolf Lodge, or a camping adventure. The price tag isn’t what is important to your kiddos, so don’t break the bank…some seasons are leaner than others. Just remember, money comes and goes, you never get back time, and you will never regret taking the trip.
How do you “wrap” a trip?
There are a few ways you could go about this. For one of the Disney trips, we gifted our kids Mickey Ears and Disney shirts in a Disney gift box…and they had to GUESS what the present was. For our Beaches Turks and Caicos trip, they had a scavenger hunt where each small gift was pertinent to the trip and had a clue attached…ending at their friend’s house who ALSO was gifted the trip from his parents. For a Universal trip, I got two white balloons filled with helium, drew Hedwig on them, made their “going to Universal” cards and put them in an envelope with a red wax (ok fine, it was modeling clay) tied to the “feet”. I put some Harry Potter shirts for the whole family in the bottom of a tall box, then put the balloon Hedwigs in there, and wrapped the box. One year, We will most likely LEAVE on Christmas, or shortly after. SO many ways you can do this, and it’s a lot of fun to come up with creative ways to surprise your kids! Eventually though they will start asking “I wonder what we are going to do THIS year!!”.
